To prepare a doctorate in the Doctoral School of Physics and Engineering, it is compulsory to have funding of at least €1,200 net per month for three years.

This funding is usually offered with the thesis subject by the future thesis supervisor. The thesis supervisor can obtain this funding from different sources:

  • As a quota of doctoral contracts awarded by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research awarded to the Doctoral School every year by the University and allocated to priority subjects or according to student merit.
  • As a quota of contracts for disabled doctoral students
  • As a quota of contracts for doctoral students supporting the interdisciplinary nature of the subject
  • IdEx Bordeaux (international doctorate campaign)
  • Nouvelle Aquitaine Region
  • Rresearch institutes: CNRS, CEA, CNES
  • LabEx LaPhia
  • Major research programs: ANR, European framework programs
  • Other ministries, companies, foundations or associations with which the thesis supervisor works in the context of a research project.

These types of funding result in different types of employment contracts:

Doctoral contract

The doctoral contract is drawn up for a period of three years and cannot be of a shorter duration. It may be extended by one year, if justified by exceptional circumstances relating to the contractual doctoral student’s research work or for reasons linked with the student’s personal life, such as maternity or sick leave.

Activities assigned to the contractual doctoral student must be related exclusively to research (level 1 doctoral contract).
Other activities such as university teaching or expertise (scientific and technical information, validation of research, consultancy or expert missions for companies or local authorities) may be carried out with the agreement of the Human Resources Department of the institution employing the doctoral student. These activities must then be the subject of an amendment to this contract in the form of an complementary missions of teaching or expertise, which will be remunerated in the form of additional pay (level 2 doctoral contract).

On 1st July 2014, minimum pay was:

  • €1,684.93 gross per month (or €1,367.80 net per month) for a level 1 doctoral contract
  • €2,024.70 gross per month (or €1,643.70 net per month) for a level 2 doctoral contract

All public institutions of an administrative nature in higher education and research are able to recruit contractual doctoral students: universities, CNRS, INP, INRIA, etc.

Industrial agreements for training through research in enterprises (CIFRE)

For 30 years, the Ministry of Higher Education and Research has funded CIFRE agreements to develop research collaboration between companies and academia while at the same time enabling doctoral students to work on a very high level training program leading to a doctorate.
The doctoral student prepares the doctorate in a company, carrying out a research and development program in association with a research team external to the company. They are given an open-ended contract or a fixed-term contract, as agreed with the company, and receive a minimum gross wage of €1,957/month

Fixed-term contracts

Funded with the research unit’s credits, the monthly amount must be at least €1,200 net.

Study grants

Reserved for foreign doctoral students, the monthly amount must be at least €1,200 net for 3 years.
