At the University of Bordeaux, applications for authorization to enroll for an HDR (accreditation to supervise research), like authorizations for a defence, are approved by the Academic Council (CAC) sitting with a limited number of members.
The Doctoral School examines applications for authorization to enroll for an HDR
The Doctoral School is authorized by the President of the university to review applications that fall within its scientific fields.
The Doctoral School reviews requests for authorization to enroll for an HDR and appoints an internal reviewer. The application is presented to the Doctoral School council, which provides the Academic Council (CAc) with a reasoned opinion, according to a timetable established at the beginning of the academic year. The candidate must have conducted several years of research since obtaining his/her doctoral degree, contributed to doctoral student supervision and published about their current research.
Once a candidate has been granted authorization to enroll for an HDR, he/she is eligible to supervise a doctoral student and has a period of two years to defend his/her HDR.
To apply for an HDR, an appointment must be made with the Director of the Doctoral School to discuss the candidate's application, which must include:
- a detailed C.V. showing program responsibilities and other shared responsibilities, scientific or financial partners, student supervision indicating, if known, the students' career paths, a complete list of presentations, publications and other contributions
- a fifteen-page summary of post-doctoral research and prospects to be developed in the HDR dissertation.
Candidates who receive authorization for an HDR or ADT must also attend a training day organized by the College of Doctoral Schools (3 sessions organized every year).
Defense the HDR
The candidate must have obtained an authorization from the Academic Council (ACC) in restricted training of less than 2 years.
